The No. 25-ranked California men's tennis team (2-2) won the doubles point but was unable to capitalize in a 4-3 loss to site-host No. 19 North Carolina (5-1) in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend consolation match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Golden Bears have dropped two straight matches after opening the season with two straight victories and return home for a four-match home stand.

Cal got off to a good start as freshman Nick Andrews and junior Kallim Stewart clinched the doubles point for the Bears with their 8-5 victory over Andrew Crone and Zach Hunter on the second court. On the top doubles court, the No. 16-ranked duo of senior Geoff Chizever and sophomore Pedro Zerbini took out fifth-ranked Clay Donato and Taylor Fogelman, 8-6, to give Cal the advantage. The Tar Heels responded with a win on the third court as Brennan Boyajian and Alex Rafiee defeated the sophomore pair of Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsarov by an 8-5 count before Cal secured the doubles point with its court-two win.

North Carolina wasted no time tying things up as No. 73-ranked Donato made short work of No. 49 Stewart in a 6-3, 6-1 win. Shortly thereafter, Cal went ahead, 2-1, when senior Eoin Heavey posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Luke Mojica on court five. The Tar Heels answered with a victory on court three as Andrews fell in two sets, 6-3, 6-4, to Crone but the Bears pushed ahead once more when Katsarov secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kyle Baker on the sixth court.

In a seesaw battle, the Tar Heels tied the match one last time when No. 59-ranked Fogelman earned a break at 5-2 to eventually claim the third and final set from No. 72 Zerbini and win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. With the match tied at three points each, North Carolina got what it needed from Boyajian as he battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the third set to drop an 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 win on Dahan on the fourth court to clinch the match for the Heels.

The Bears return to Berkeley for four consecutive home matches beginning with a rematch against Hawai'i on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. PT at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Check for updates and information.
