The No. 2-ranked California women's tennis team (2-0) put an end to No. 37 Washington's (4-1) perfect run with a 5-2 win today at the Hellman Tennis Complex in the 2009 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. With the victory, the Golden Bears earn a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc. in two weeks (Feb. 13-16). Earlier in the day, No. 48 Long Beach State (1-2) defeated No. 49 North Carolina State (1-3), 6-1, in the consolation match.

The Bears had little trouble clinching the doubles point but found themselves in a dog fight in their singles matches. Senior Bojana Bobusic and freshman Stephany Chang teamed up to finish off Aleksandra Malovic and Lina Xu on the third doubles court, 8-0, before the No. 7-ranked duo of sophomore Marina Cossou and senior Claire Ilcinkas claimed the doubles point for Cal with an 8-4 win against No. 47-ranked Venise Chan and Denise Dy on the top court.

Cal jumped out to a 2-0 lead as senior Marion Ravelojaona got off court first with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Joyce Ardies on court five. No. 30-ranked Ilcinkas pushed that lead to 3-0 when she defeated Xu on court three, 6-4, 6-3. The Huskies answered back with a win on the top court next as No. 81-ranked Chan pulled out the 6-3, 7-5 win against sophomore Mari Andersson.

No. 15-ranked Bobusic completed her court-four match next and came through with the clincher as she parlayed a 7-1 first-set tiebreaker victory into the momentum she needed to wipe out Samantha Smith with a 6-0 second set. No. 13-ranked Cossou had trouble with the No. 112-ranked Dy on court two and fell in a three-setter, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Cossou fought hard to win the second set tiebreaker, 7-5, but could not outmatch Dy in the third.

Chang and Malovic were the last to get off court in the day's only other three-set match with the Bears prevailing, 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-2 to set up the final score, 5-2, in Cal's favor.

The Bears hit the road next weekend as they head to Southern California to face San Diego State on Friday (Feb. 6) at 2 p.m. and UC Irvine on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 11 a.m. Please check for more information and details this week.
