UCLA Freshman Gregor Main Qualifies for Buick Open
Feb. 3, 2009
UCLA freshman Gregor Main earned a spot in this week's Buick Open at Torrey Pines by firing a score of 67 (-5) on Monday at El Camino Country Club and then surviving a four-for-three playoff.
Main began the day with an eagle at the first hole to drop to two-under par. He improved to three-under with a birdie at the seventh and went out in 33 (-3).
A bogey at the par 4 12th was the only blemish on his card. Down the stretch, he birdied three of the last five holes, including the 17th and 18th for a score of five-under, which was matched by four other players.
Santa Barbara native Kevin Larsen had already earned one spot by winning the qualifying with a score of 65 (-7). Main survived the playoff with Anthony Smith and Cortland Lowe by making par on the first extra playoff hole. Ben Fox, who also posted a 67 on Monday, failed to qualify in the playoff.
On Friday, Jan. 30, Main won the pre-qualifying tournament at the same course with a 66 (-6).
The Buick Open begins Thurs., Feb. 5 at Torrey Pines, site of the 2008 U.S. Open. Former Bruins Parker McLachlin, John Merrick, Brandt Jobe, Scott McCarron, Tom Pernice, Jr., Spencer Levin and Corey Pavin are entered in the field this year.
