USC Swimming, Diving Signs Talented Class For 2009-2010

Building on the strength of a successful 2008-2009 season as well as a the huge results for Trojan swimmers at the 2008 Olympics, USC third-year head men's and women's swimming coach Dave Salo, as well as 10th-year head diving coach Hongping Li, announced the signings of talented men's and women's classes for the 2009-2010 campaign.
On the men's side, the Trojans inked British Olympian Richard Charlesworth from Hatfield, England, prep All-American Jon Denton-Schneider from San Rafael, Calif., Spencer DiDio from Carlsbad, Calif., 2008 Olympic Trials participant Justin DiFederico from El Cajon, Calif., 2008 Olympic Trials participant Alex Lendrum from Phoenix, Ariz., and top junior college transfer Emmett Walling from Manasquan, N.J.
On the women's side, USC signed 2008 Olympic Trials participant Haley Anderson of Granite Bay, Calif., Indiana All-American transfer Presley Bard, Lolo Blair and Lindsay Parrish, a pair of national qualifiers from Santa Barbara, Calif., 2008 Olympic Trials participant Jordan Danny from Santa Clarita, Calif., UC Irvine transfer and U.S. National team member Lyndsay DePaul of Orange, Calif., 2008 Olympic Trials finalist Katie Nolan from Hershey, Pa., 2008 U.S. Olympic diver and long-time U.S. national teamer Ariel Rittenhouse from Santa Cruz, Calif., 2008 Olympic Trials semifinalist Jessica Schmitt from San Diego, Calif., Kate Shumway, a national qualifier from Winnetka, Ill., 2008 Philippino Olympian Christel Simms from Honolulu, Hawaii, and Chelsea Wild, a national qualifier from Laguna Beach, Calif.
'We are thrilled to have signed such a broad range of extremely talented swimmers as well as one of the top divers in the country,' Salo said. 'Combining the success that Trojan swimmers had in Beijing with the growth that our program has shown this season, the momentum we are building at USC is palpable.
'We believe the swimmers and divers joining our program will allow us to continue to grow and build upon on what we are doing now as we strive to return as one of the NCAA's elite programs.'

HALEY ANDERSON -- Granite Bay HS, Granite Bay, CA
IN BRIEF: Haley Anderson is among the most talented prep recruits in the country in the distance freestyle and medley ... At the 2008 Olympic Trials she was 17th in the 400m IM, 20th in the 400m free, 25th in the 800m free and also competed in the 200m fly ... At the 2009 Junior Pan Pacs, she was first in the 800m free ... She was first in the 800m free at the 2008 Speedo Junior Nationals ... Older sister Alyssa swims for Arizona.
PRESLEY BARD -- Napa HS / Indiana, Napa, CA
Presley Bard, a transfer from Indiana who will be eligible in 2009-10, is a top-flight backstroker who comes to USC as a 2008 Olympic Trials finalist and a three-time All-American ... As a sophomore at Indiana in 2008, she was sixth in the 100y back at the NCAA Championships and helped the Hoosiers to the finals in the 200y and 400y medley relay ... She was second in the 100y back at the 2008 Big Ten Championships and anchored Indiana's first-place 200y medley relay ... After the season, she was fifth in the 200m back at the Olympic Trials. She is also a member of the 2009 U.S. National Team in the 100m back ... At the 2007 NCAA Championships, she was ninth in the 200y back. She was the 2007 Big Ten Freshman of the Year after winning conference titles in the 200y back and the 400y medley relay.
LOLO BLAIR -- Santa Barbara HS, Santa Barbara, CA
One of the top swimmers in California, Lolo Blair, a junior national qualifier, is a strong backstroker and who will provide quality depth in the event as well as in the freestyle. She is the high school teammate of fellow future Trojan Lindsay Parrish. She was a 2008 CIF finalist in the back.
JORDAN DANNY> -- Hart HS, Santa Clarita, CA
Jordan Danny is one of the country's fastest young breaststrokers who will be a strong contributor in dual meets as well as at the Pac-10 and NCAA level. She competed at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, where she was 39th in the 100m breast and 19th in the 200m breast.
LYNDSAY DePAUL -- Villa Park HS / UC Irvine, Orange, CA
Lyndsay DePaul, a transfer from UC Irvine who will be eligible in 2009-10, is a U.S. National Team member and an NCAA Championships point scorer who will further strengthen USC's fly and medley events ... She will represent the U.S. at the 2009 World University Games ... While swimming for UC Irvine in 2008, she was a consolation finalist in the 400y IM at the NCAA Championships ... She was the 2007 Big West Athlete of the Year and named a Mid-Major All-American by CollegeSwimming.com ... She was the 2007 Big West champion in the 200y and 400y IM, the 200y fly and the 200y medley relay.
KATIE NOLAN --Hershey HS, Hershey, PA
Katie Nolan, a 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials finalist, is a fly and sprint free specialist who will have a big impact individually and on relays ... At the 2008 Trials, Nolan competed in both the 100m and 200m fly ... A member of the 2007 U.S. Junior National Team, she won silver in the 100m fly at the 2006 Speedo Junior Nationals ... She has twice won the Most Outstanding Swimmer honor at the PIAA Championships and has won nine Pennsylvania state gold medals and one bronze.
LINDSAY PARRISH -- Santa Barbara HS, Santa Barbara, CA
Lindsay Parrish, a national level qualifier, is a butterfly specialist who will compete to be a key member of USC's dual meet and conference level efforts ... She served as team captain of both the swim and water polo teams ... She is the high school teammate of fellow future Trojan Lolo Blair. She was a 2008 CIF finalist in the free and fly.
ARIEL RITTENHOUSE -- Home School, Santa Cruz, CA
Ariel Rittenhouse, a 2008 Olympian and long-time U.S. National Team member, is one of the country's top divers and will provide top-level scoring in every meet in which she competes ... At the 2008 Olympics, she finished fourth on 3-meter synchro (with Kelci Bryant) ... She was third on 3-meter synchro in 2008 at the U.S. Diving Spring Nationals, the FINA Diving World Cup and FINA Diving World Series events in Mexico and London ... She was second at the 2007 Pan Am Games ... She was first with Bryant at the 2007 Kaiser Permanente National Championships ... Rittenhouse's mother, Sharon, attended USC and was a 1964 Olympic silver medalist in the 400m IM. Ariel's uncle, Michael Finneran, was an Olympic diver in 1972.
JESSICA SCHMITT -- Torrey Pines HS, San Diego, CA
Jessica Schmitt comes to USC as one of the nation's top breaststroke recruits ... She was a 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials semifinalist in the 200m breast and also swam the 100m breast ... She also competed at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials as a 13-year old.
KATE SHUMWAY -- New Trier HS, Winnetka, IL
A national qualifier, Kate Shumway is an outstanding freestyle specialist who will be key individually and on relays. She is a state champion from Illinois.
CHRISTEL SIMMS -- Punahou HS, Honolulu, HI
Christel Simms is an excellent freestyle sprinter who brings national and international experience with her to the Trojans ... She represented the Philippines at the 2008 Olympics, finishing 41st in the 100m free and 47th in the 50m free. She was only the seventh woman to represent the Philippines in the Olympics ... She is strong in the freestyle and fly and should be a key relay swimmer ... She has broken more than 50 Hawaii state age group records ... Was a member of the 2007 U.S. National Junior Swim Team.
CHELSEA WILD -- Laguna Beach HS, Laguna Beach, CA
Chelsea Wild is a talented distance freestyler and a junior national qualifier who will lend big help in USC's distance program ... As a sophomore she won CIF Southern Section titles in the 200y and 500y free.
RICHARD CHARLESWORTH -- Hatfield, England, John F. Kennedy H.S.
Richard Charlesworth, a 2008 Olympian from Great Britain who competed in Beijing in the 1500m free, joins the Trojans for the 2009 spring semester to bolster an already improving distance freestyle corps. He will provide an immediate impact not only in the distance events but in the 800y free relay as well.
JON DENTON-SCHNEIDER -- Marin Academy, San Rafael, CA
Jon Denton-Schneider is an up-and-coming breaststroker who should provide a big impact for the Trojans ... At the 2008 North Coast Section championships, he was second in the 100y breast, earning prep All-American honors.
SPENCER DiDIO -- Carlsbad HS, Carlsbad, CA
Spencer DiDio is a strong butterfly specialist who add to a quickly improving butterfly corps for the Trojans ...DiDio was the 2008 San Diego Union-Tribune Swimmer of the Year after he won four Division I titles, including the 200y IM and the 100y fly and two relays, helping his school to its sixth straight Division I title.
JUSTIN DiFEDERICO -- Christian Sr. HS, El Cajon, CA
Justin DiFederico is a talented and versatile swimmer who could provide a big impact in a the fly and other events next season ... At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, he was 54th in the 200m fly (2:03.11) ... Named to the San Diego Union All-San Diego Section first team ... At the 2008 CIF San Diego Section Division II Championships, he was first in the 100y fly and 100y back.
ALEX LENDRUM -- Phoenix, AZ, Brophy College Prep
Alex Lendrum, one of the top prep recruits in the country, is a versatile swimmer who is comfortable in a variety of events. At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, he was 44th in the 200m back ... At the Arizona Class 5A Division I Championships, he was part of four state records. He broke the record in the 500y free (4:27.67) and tied it in the 200y IM (1:49.41) in helping Brophy win its 21st consecutive state title. He won the 200y free state title as a junior.
EMMETT WALLING -- Manasquan HS / Indian River College, Manasquan, NJ
Emmett Walling, a JC transfer from Indian River College in Fort Pierce, Fla., will be a big addition to USC's sprint free ranks as well as in the 100y breast ... Walling was part of Indian River's 34th straight NJCAA national title in 2008, taking third in the country in the 100y free and was part of an NJCAA record in the 400y free relay ... He was the 2005 NJSIAA individual state champion in the 100y breast and the 200 IM.
