Lee Leading Hawai'i Invitational After Day 2

Feb. 5, 2009

KOHALA COAST, HAWAI'I -- Three of the top four scorers after the second day of play of the Hawai'i-Hilo Inviational belong to the University of Washington.

Huskies junior Richard Lee is ahead of all players going into the final round, after shooting a second-round, 2-under 70 -- adding to a first-round 68 -- to give him an overall score of 6-under 138. Lee is one of three UW men to record consecutive days under par. Juniors Nick Taylor (69-71-140) and Chris Killmer (71-70-141) are also leading most of the competition as they are in second and third place, respectively.

'Those three guys have really played well this week and I'm excited about the way they were able to handle themselves in the rough conditions,' said University of Washington head coach Matt Thurmond.

Despite having three tremendous scorers, the Huskies fell from atop the leader board after Thursday's round as Southern California, which has a two day score of 569 or 7-under. Thurmond is confident, however, that his team (573), which trails by just four strokes, can overcome such a deficit.

'Playing well in the final round is really one of the things that we pride ourselves in,' he said. 'When you have to play well, these guys are mature enough to get their concentration up and hit big shots when they need to.'

During the fall season, the Huskies often saved their best round for last. Either way, today's showing left mixed emotions with Thurmond.

'I feel a little bit of everything, and so does the team' he said. 'One the one hand, we're really happy for those four guys, but we're not in the lead, and we've had two other guys that haven't played their best golf this week, so I'm not as happy with that.'

USC and Washington have adjusted well to the tough pin placements and swirling wind on Kona Island. The two Pac-10 Conference teams remain separated from the rest of the 17-team field after two days, as Colorado is in third and trailing UW by 11 strokes. The final round of competition begins at 9:30 PT and live scoring is not available.
