Main Tied for 15th after First Round at Buick Invitational

Feb. 5, 2009

UCLA freshman Gregor Main posted an opening round 70 (-2) Thursday and was tied for 15th place after the first day of competition at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines.

Main, 19, made four birdies and two bogeys on the North Course and had 32 putts. Nearly 87 percent of his drives were in the fairway.

His score of 70 was better than any U.S. amateur in the field, and it beat the six other former Bruins playing in the event. However, five of those players played the more difficult South Course, which Main will play on Friday.

Former Bruins John Merrick, Scott McCarron and Parker McLachlin shot scores of 74 (+2). Tom Pernice Jr., signed for a 75 (+3) and Brandt Jobe and Corey Pavin each posted scores of 78 (+6). All but Merrick played the South Course.
