No. 2 Golden Bears Hit the Road to Face SDSU and UCI

Feb. 5, 2009

BERKELEY - THIS WEEK: The No. 2-ranked California women's tennis team (2-0) hits the road for the first time this season to face San Diego State (4-0) Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego Calif. The Golden Bears will turn around and take on No. 65-ranked UC Irvine (1-2) Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. PT at Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, Calif.

LAST WEEK: The Bears had little trouble in their first dual matches of the year as they hosted the first-annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Hellman Tennis Complex. This was the first year that the ITA instituted qualifying matches for the National Team Indoor Championships whereas in the past, the top 16 ranked teams from the previous year's final poll were automatically entered. The Bears came out and dropped a 7-0 sweep on No. 48 Long Beach State and took a 5-2 victory over No. 37 Washington to lock up a berth to the National Team Indoor Championships coming up Feb. 13-16 in Madison, Wisc.

ON COURT - SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs are off to a hot start after racking up four consecutive wins to open the dual season. After getting two easy victories at home (6-1 over UC Riverside, 7-0 over Cal State Fullerton), SDSU was tested on the road in Hawai'i but emerged with two more wins as the Aztecs defeated Hawai'i in a 4-3 finish before taking out UC Irvine, 5-2. Sophomore Julia Trunk is ranked No. 93 in women's singles as the only ranked player on the team. Head coach Peter Mattera has led the Aztecs to 10 postseason appearances and compiled a record of 232-159 (.593). The Bears hold a 31-7 all-time record when facing San Diego State and took home a 7-0 win the last time the two teams met in 2007. Cal has not lost to the Aztecs in 15 years, winning 13 straight matches since 1994.

ON COURT - NO. 65 UC IRVINE: The Anteaters split matches last week as they defeated Hawai'i in a 4-3 victory before falling to San Diego State, 5-2. UCI's only other match this year resulted in a 6-1 loss to USC. Freshman Courtney Byron posted the only point against the Trojans and also won both her matches last weekend after being named the Big West Player of the Week. 12th-year head coach Mike Edles led UCI to the Big West regular season championship with a perfect 8-0 conference record and guided the Anteaters to their first NCAA tournament appearance in program history a year ago. UCI has no ranked players or doubles teams in the ITA national rankings. The Bears are 6-2 in eight meetings against the Anteaters and claimed a 9-0 win in 1990, the last meeting of the two teams.

BEARS IN THE RANKS: The Golden Bears are ranked No. 2 as a team in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Associate (ITA) poll. Cal has four ranked singles players led by 13th-ranked sophomore Marina Cossou. Senior Bojana Bobusic isn't far behind, holding the No. 15 spot and fellow senior Claire Ilcinkas is ranked No. 30. Freshman Jana Juricova is ranked No. 52. The Bears also boast one of the top-10 ranked doubles teams in the country as Cossou and Ilcinkas team up to hold down the No. 7 ranking.
