Feb. 6, 2009
BERKELEY - THIS WEEK: The No. 24-ranked California men's tennis team (2-2) hosts No. 54 Hawai'i (1-1) in an early-season rematch at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears defeated the Warriors on the islands by a 6-1 score to open the dual season on Jan. 15. Live court-by-court webcasts of the match will be available via hyperlinks at the CalBears.com men's tennis home page.
LAST WEEK: The Bears had their 2-0 start derailed when they ran into some tough competition at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event in Chapel Hill, N.C. Cal had its shot at a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships snuffed out by No. 14 Michigan in a 5-2 loss before fighting tooth and nail to a 4-3 defeat at the hands of No. 19 North Carolina. No. 72-ranked sophomore Pedro Zerbini suffered just his third loss of the season against the Tar Heels but picked up his team-high 12th win of the year against the Wolverines.
ON COURT - NO. 54 HAWAII: The Warriors opened the season with a 6-1 loss to the Bears but bounced back to take a 6-1 victory over San Diego State two days later. No. 56-ranked sophomore Dennis Lajola leads his team after earning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors last week. He holds a 9-4 singles record this year. Hawai'i faces Cal in just its first of three matches on the mainland. After playing the Bears, the Warriors will head south to San Diego to take on USD before returning to the Bay Area to take on Saint Mary's College. The Bears hold a perfect 3-0 all-time series record against Hawai'i.
