Penna, Haber Named To ESPN Preseason All-America Teams
Feb. 6, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - Junior outfielder Alissa Haber and senior pitcher Missy Penna were listed among the nation's 24 most promising players for 2009, when the ESPN.com Preseason All-America Teams were released yesterday.
The Cardinal players were among seven selections from the Pac-10. Stanford and UCLA led the conference with two picks apiece. Both Penna and Haber were also members of USA Softball's Top-50 Player of the Year Watch List that was released last week.
Haber has earned All-America honors the last two years after leading Stanford in nearly every offensive category. She hit .374 last season and became just the 10th player in school history to record 70 or more hits in a single year (77). Halfway through her career, her batting average ranks second only to two-time Olympian Jessica Mendoza.
Penna, who earned her first All-America honor last season, is a three-time All-Pac-10 honoree and the nation's only pitcher entering the year with more than 900 strikeouts. She set a school record with 37 wins last season, pitched a school-best 335 innings and became the eighth player in Pac-10 history, and the first at Stanford, to record 400 or more strikeouts in a single year.
The complete list of 2009 honorees is available here.
