Top-Ranked UCLA Headlines Regional Challenge Field

The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team will participate in the annualNorthrup Grumman Regional Challenge, Feb. 9-11 at the Palos Verdes GolfCourse.
The Bruins, ranked No.1 in the GolfStat and Coaches polls, will attempt tosettle the rankings debate in Palos Verdes. The field features GolfWeek'stop three teams: No.1 Arizona State, No.2 UCLA and third ranked USC.
'Obviously, we had a great fall (season), and we come into the (RegionalChallenge) as one of the favored teams,' said Head Coach Carrie Forsyth.'But we have a clear understanding that the rankings really don't meananything, because this is a new year and we have a lot in front of us toaccomplish.'
In the fall, the Bruins won five stroke play events and produced threeindividual champions. Their team stroke average of 284.1 is on pace tobreak the school record by more than seven strokes. Five of the top eightplayers on the team are averaging 72.0 or better and six are averagingbetter than 73.0 strokes per round.
Freshman Stephanie Kono, who leads the team with a stroke average of 70.6has played 11 rounds this season in 12-under par. She is ranked ninthnationally and boasts a victory in the stroke play portion of theCollegiate Match Play Championship.
Senior Tiffany Joh, a three-time All-American, ranks 16th with a strokeaverage of 71.5 and three Top 20 results.
Junior Sydnee Michaels, a 2008 All-American, recorded her second collegiatevictory in winning the Mason Rudolph Championship with an 11-under parscore of 205. Ranked 20th nationally, she is averaging 71.2 strokes perround and is six-under par through 11 rounds.
Sophomores Glory Yang and Maria Jose Uribe were ranked 32nd and 56th in thenation, respectively. Yang won the Top Cup in September with a four-underpar score of 212 and boasts a 71.6 scoring average. Uribe, a consensus 1stTeam All-American last year, has recorded three Top 20 results in fourstarts with a 72.6 scoring average.
