Breaking It Down With Bailey

Feb. 10, 2009

What a great first weekend for the Dawgs! I am so proud of the way our team played. We faced some aggressive teams, but our pitching and defense shut them down. With Danielle, Felecia and Jenna turning it over in the circle, the outfield flipping over fences to rob home runs and our infield making diving stops, nothing could faze us.

Our offense also came through, with home runs by some baller freshmen (Niki and Tails) and our senior leaders (`Shlyn, Charters and Lo G), clutch hits by our vets and the younger girls stepping it up under pressure.

The weather was colder than Seattle and it drizzled every ten minutes, but once the game got going, none of that was even a factor. Hand warmers in the back pockets, we got our jobs done and every game was a team effort. I found it promising that when someone wasn't able to get the job done, someone else would step right up and make it happen. This was a great start to the season for us and we can only get better from here.

There were some interesting things that happened over the tournament: first of all, on our bus ride from the Las Vegas airport, Coach Tarr played charades with us and came up with words like 'because' and 'concept' that we had to act out...we didn't know she was so creative. Friday was Ashlyn's 22nd birthday, but she decided to wait until Saturday and Sunday to hit home runs. Alyson saved seven potential runs by flipping over the outfield fence (which were the sickest catches ever!) on Friday night against BYU. Felecia hit a ball 300 feet during our pre-game batting practice (300 frickin' feet). Charters had a grand slam (nice little welcome back for her). Lauren also clutched up big time (which is no surprise) and had the game winning home run against LMU (she's had a nice little return back to the diamond). Sunday was Morgan's 20th birthday and she saw two pitches in her first two at-bats...right into each of her calves. And our bus driver researches Bigfoot...

We'll get another opportunity next weekend in sunny San Diego to challenge ourselves against some other great teams! Maybe we will all get a little color!!

Stay classy and GO DAWGS!!

Love, 20
