Stanford's Neill and Penna Named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week
Feb. 10, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--STANFORD junior Rosey Neill and senior Missy Penna were named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 3-9, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Neill, a native of Laguna Hills, Calif., opened up the season by belting three home runs and hitting .500 (6-for-12), helping Stanford start the year with a 4-1 record. Neill’s weekend was highlighted by knocking two balls out of the park in back-to-back at-bats against Texas Tech, spurring the Cardinal’s 6-1 route of the Red Raiders. Later that day, Neil would again homer against Kansas and close out the weekend recording 7 RBI and a 1.250 slugging percentage. Behind the plate, Neill was also a stand out defensively, registering 42 putouts and catching a no hitter for fellow Pac-10 honoree Penna.
A product of Miami, Fla., Penna threw four complete games for Stanford, recording two shutouts and a 3-1 record on the weekend. In the game against Kansas, a team which upset two top-10 ranked opponents in the previous two contests, Penna tied the Stanford record with her fifth career no-hitter. The senior struck out batters in 13 of the 15 outs for the Cardinal and finished the weekend with a 0.61 ERA allowing only two runs.
Neill and Penna are the 38th and 39th all-time Player of the Week selections for Stanford. Individually, this is the second honor for Neill, while Penna now joins the ranks of former Cardinal great Jessica Mendoza as a five-time Pac-10 Player of the Week honoree.
