Feb. 12, 2009

CORVALLIS – The 2008 season begins for the Oregon State women’s track team on Saturday, Feb. 14 in Seattle Wash. at the Husky Classic indoor meet. Racing begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Valentine’s Day competition.

More than 50 programs, a number of clubs and unattached runners from across the country will be represented this weekend at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor. In the women’s competition seven ranked teams will be represented: No. 3 Oregon, No. 6 Florida State, No. 9 Penn State, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 12 Arizona, No. 18 BYU and No. 19 Stanford.

“This is one of the largest indoor meets in the country. They run as many as six sections in the mile alone,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “There will be a lot of very good teams and a lot of very good runners in each of the events we are in.”

A small group of five runners will represent the Beavers in three different events this weekend. Winter sickness and training aches and pains are keeping a number of women out for the meet this week.

Sophomore Abby Chesimet and sophomore Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson will run in the 3,000-meters, freshman Lorine Cruz and freshman Casey Masterson will run the mile and sophomore Jackie Brown will run the 800-meters.

“We are sending a smaller group than we have in the past due to minor injuries and we had quite a few get hit with the flu this past week so. Despite that, our girls are recovering well and I like where are at in our training at this point in the winter. We have a good group opening the season for us.”

Last year the Beavers had an impressive outing at the Husky Classic where 11 Beavers climbed into the Oregon State all-time top 10 indoor track lists that included Brown moving into seventh all-time in the 800-meters and Soza-Hodgkinson jumping into seventh all-time in the 3,000-meters.

Results will be made available at following Saturday’s races.
