UCLA Clamps Down On Arizona, 58-39

Los Angeles, Calif. - With a strong defensive effort, UCLA got back on the winning track by recording a 58-39 victory over Arizona in a Pac-10 game played at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion on Thursday evening. The Bruins held Arizona to under 40 points for the second time this year and forced the Wildcats into a season-low 22% shooting (11-50) from the field in the game. UCLA junior guard Erica Tukiainen contributed a career-high 21 points and tied her season-high with seven rebounds.

After leading by six at halftime, 30-24, UCLA scored nine of the first 11 points of the second half to claim a 13-point lead. Tukiainen and sophomore guard Doreena Campbell did all of the damage in the run, scoring five and four points, respectively. Arizona crawled back into the game, using a 9-1 run over four minutes to close to within five at 40-35 with 7:12 on the clock. UCLA outscored Arizona, however, 16-2 over the final six minutes and held the Wildcats to without a field goal for the final 8:20 to finish with the final 19-point margin of victory.

In the first half, UCLA used a 12-2 run to turn a one-point lead into an 11-point advantage with 2:09 to play in the first half. Tukiainen scored seven of the Bruins' 12 points in the run and finished the half with 12 points.

Tukiainen led all players with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Campbell added 12 points and tied her career-high with nine rebounds. Freshman guard Atonye Nyingifa was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Ify Ibekwe led Arizona, now 9-14 overall and 2-10 in the Pac-10, with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

UCLA (15-7, 6-5) will next host Arizona State (18-6, 10-2) on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 pm. The game is UCLA's Pink Zone game, and the Bruins will wear special white and pink uniforms to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game at UCLABruins.com. Prior to the game, from 11 am-1 pm, UCLA will host the 1st Annual Carnival for the Cure inside the J.D. Morgan Center. The carnival is free.
