The No. 2-ranked California women's tennis team (5-1) had its stay at the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championship cut short in the semifinal round by No. 6 Georgia (8-0) today as the Bulldogs claimed a 4-2 victory over the Golden Bears at the A.C. Nielson Tennis Stadium. Cal made its first appearance in the semifinal since 2004 and fell just short of returning to the final for the first time since 2000.

The Bears had the inside track to the doubles point with 5-4 leads on courts two and three and a 5-2 lead on the top court. No. 7-ranked doubles team sophomore Marina Cossou and senior Claire Ilcinkas defeated the 10th-ranked duo of Chelsey Gullickson and Yvette Hyndman on the top court 8-4; but the Dogs answered back with a come-from-behind win on court two as No. 34-ranked Monika Dancevic and Nadja Gilchrist pulled out the 8-6 win over sophomore Mari Andersson and freshman Jana Juricova. Georgia seized the opening for the first point of the match when Cameron Ellis and Naoko Ueshima defeated senior Bojana Bobusic and freshman Stephany Chang on the third court, 8-6.

Up a point in the match, the Bulldogs continued to roll when Ellis beat Chang on the sixth singles court, 6-3, 6-3. The Bears quickly answered back however as No. 30-ranked Ilcinkas came away with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 44 Gilchrist on court three. Andersson helped the Bears pull into a tie with the Dogs at two-all when she blasted No. 100 Hyndman with a 6-0 second set on court two after winning the first set tiebreaker, 7-2.

The Dogs wasted no time reclaiming the lead from the Bears as No. 101 Dancevic pulled out the second-set tiebreaker to defeat No. 15-ranked Bobusic, 6-3, 7-6 on court four. A point from elimination, Ravelojaona couldn't scrape together a win in the third set after fighting back for the second and fell to No. 123 Ueshima on court five, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Ueshima's match-clinching victory put Georgia into the championship match where it will face top-ranked and top-seeded Northwestern at 11 a.m. CT tomorrow (Feb. 16).

The Bears will be back in action when they open up the Pac-10 schedule with a match against Washington on Friday, Feb. 27 at 1:30 p.m. Cal follows that match with a noon bout against Washington State on Saturday, Feb. 28. Both matches will take place at Hellman Tennis Complex. Please check for more information.
