Feb. 15, 2009

The Arizona gymnastics team recorded its second highest team score for the season and beat Texas Women's University 195.425 - 193.350 in Dallas Sunday.

'It took us seven meets, but we finally put together a good one,' Arizona head coach Bill Ryden said. 'We really got a lot done this weekend and it was a good one for us. We put up a couple scores that we'll be able to count.'

Junior Sarah Tomczyk and senior Alexis Greene stood out for the Gymcats in their second meet win in three days, after they beat Brown and Wisconsin-Stout Friday in Tucson.

During the meet in Texas, Greene scored over a 39 for the first time this season on the all-around and won the all-around title.

Arizona was paced by senior Bree Workman and Tomczyk on vault. Workman won the event with a 9.825, followed closely by Tomczyk with a 9.8. Arizona scored a 48.85 as a team.

On bars, Greene led the way with her first 9.9 of the season and Tomczyk picked up a 9.8. On the bars, Arizona recorded a 48.75 team score. After struggling the last two meets, Ryden mixed up the bar lineup and it paid off with a solid score.

The Gymcats had three gymnasts tied for the lead on beam. Senior Briana Bergeson and freshmen Britnie Jones and Katie Matusik all scored a 9.85 for the event-high. As a team, the Wildcats recorded a 49.025. This was the third meet in a row, the Wildcats put up a 49 or better on the beam.

Tomczyk also won the floor with a 9.9, while the team put up a 48.8. She led another solid floor score for the team.

'I hope we look back and this weekend will be a turning point for our season,' said Ryden. 'We need to just keep getting better.'

The Wildcats return to the mat next week when they host in-state rival Arizona State Friday at 7:00 p.m. at McKale Center.
