Feb. 18, 2009

SKILLMAN, N.J. - California women's tennis had two players honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) today for their play at last weekend's ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis. The Golden Bears placed senior Claire Ilcinkas on the team along with sophomore Mari Andersson. Ilcinkas was selected for the fourth court while Andersson was selected for the third. Andersson also received Pac-10 Player of the Week honors this week.

This is the second time the ITA has named an all-tournament team at the team indoor championship. Voters for the team included all 16 coaches of the participating schools and the ITA National Ranking Committee. Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia was named the most outstanding player of the tournament as the all-tournament team's top-court representative.

Andersson and Ilcinkas helped the Bears to a 2-1 record and their first appearance in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship semifinal since 2004. Andersson won all three of her singles matches--each over ranked opponents--without dropping a set and improved to 8-1 on the season. Partnered with freshman Jana Juricova, she lost just one match and improved to 6-1 in doubles play.

No. 30-ranked Ilcinkas also won all three of her singles matches without dropping a set, including two wins over ranked opponents and extended her singles win streak to nine consecutive matches. In doubles play, she teamed up with sophomore Marina Cossou to garner two big wins over top-ten opponents, No. 5 Falconi and McDowell of Georgia Tech and No. 10 Gullickson and Hyndman of Georgia.

The Bears have a bye week before beginning Pac-10 play against the Washingtons. Cal will host Washington at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 and Washington State at noon on Saturday, Feb. 28. Both matches will take place at Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. Please check for more information.
