Match Data: The Wildcats (6-1) were supposed to be playing the Red Raiders (1-2) on Sunday, but a scheduling conflict forced them to move the match up to Friday. Arizona hopes to continue its four-match winning streak. 



The Rankings: In the latest ITA collegiate rankings, Arizona is listed at No. 45 overall. Individually sophomore Jay Goldman is ranked No.88 in singles play and the doubles team of Francois VanderMerwe and Pat Metham is listed at No. 18. Texas Tech is listed No. 26 overall. Individually freshman Raony Carvalho is ranked No. 19 in singles play and the doubles team of Carvalho and senior Christian Rojmar is listed at No. 7.



Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz…will begin his fourth season at the helm for the Wildcats. He currently has a record of 34-38.  Berkowitz joined the program in 2004 and has held numerous national and collegiate coaching positions. He was promoted to the head coaching position in the spring of 2005 after serving as hall-of-famer Bill Wright's assistant.  Berkowitz, 34, was a top collegiate player for the universities of Kentucky and New Mexico, respectively.  Berkowitz began his coaching career in 1999 as an assistant coach at Alabama for three seasons. In his final year he helped the Crimson Tide earn a No. 18 national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Championships.  He is assisted by Tom Lloyd, who is in his fourth year in that capacity.


Scouting the Red Raiders: Texas Tech (1-2) is coming off its first win of the season by beating Denver, 4-3. Prior to the win the Red Raiders lost to LSU, 4-3, and Notre Dame, 4-0. Texas Tech is led by senior Christian Rojmar and freshman Raony Carvalho.


The Series vs. Texas Tech: This will be the fifth meeting of the two schools, with the Wildcats winning the previous four matches.    

Pac-10 Player of the Week for Feb. 9: Junior Andres Arango was named Pac-10 Men’s Tennis Player of the week for the week of Feb. 9 after his dominance of No. 34 South Florida and Saint Mary’s. Arango continued his winning ways by defeating Asaf Cohen of San Francisco 6-4, 6-2. His singles record is 5-1, 1-0 in position #1 and 4-1 in position #2.  

The Beast Pat Metham: Junior Pat Metham is playing well in position #5. Through five matches, Metham boosts a 4-1 record and 1-0 record playing in position #4. He also teams with senior Francois VanderMerwe in doubles. The duo is ranked No. 18 and has a 2-0 record, including a 9-8 (7-3) upset over No. 15 Lucas Jovita and Thomas Estrada of South Florida.

Jason “Vamos” Zafiros: Freshman Jason Zafiros lost his first set of the season Einar Hart of San Francisco, but rebounded nicely taking sets two and three to win the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Zafiros remained undefeated, pushing his singles record to 7-0. Zafiros is 2-0 playing in position #5 and 5-0 playing in position #6.

Another Andres: Andres Arango is not the only Andres playing well for the Wildcats. Sophomore Andres Carrasco continues to play well in position #4 where he has a 5-1 record. “Nacho” saw his first action in doubles when he teamed with Arango and together they defeated Torin Ching and Mitch Del Rosario of San Francisco 8-4.


Some New (Volunteer) Coaching Help: This year Arizona is pleased to have ATP all-pro Taylor Dent as a volunteer assistant coach throughout the season.  Dent, who was ranked as the No. 21 player in the world on August 8th 2005, suffered a back injury which caused him to miss most of the past seasons. After having successful surgery, Dent was contacted by good friend and former coach Tom Lloyd, now an assistant with Arizona, who extended the coaching invitation.  Dent, while working on rehabbing his back, will coach the Wildcats on specific and individual techniques. Dent is known as an aggressive serve-and-volleyer with one of the biggest serves on the tour, tying Andy Roddick for the record of fastest serve at 155 mph.



Fall Season: The Cats participated in six fall tournaments during the fall semester...In the Aggie Fall invite, the Costa Mesa Futures, the Arizona Fall Classic, the All-American Championships, the ITA West Regional Championships and the UNLV Classic … In Las Cruces, N.M., senior Francois VanderMerwe defeated Brian Joiner from ACU 6-1, 6-4 in the Crimson Singles Flight (Final Round) … In the first annual Arizona Classic, freshman Jason Zafiros won the singles round … In Las Vegas, VanderMerwe lost to Maxime Adam of Fresno Pacific 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals … In Malibu, Calif., at the ITA West Regional Championships, four Wildcats- Jay Goldman, Pat Metham, Andres Arango, Andres Carrasco- all advanced to the Round of 16.


Up Next: Arizona will be in action again on Sunday Feb. 22, 2009 when they take on No. 50 San Diego at 10:00 a.m. at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
