FIRST PITCH: The Washington State University baseball team opens its 2009 baseball season with a three-game series at Arkansas...series starts with a doubleheader, Friday, Feb. 20 beginning at 11:05 a.m. Pacifi c...concludes with a single game, Sunday, Feb. 22 at 9:05 a.m...there is no game, Saturday due to expected bad weather in Fayetteville...game originally scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Friday creating the doubleheader.

WASHINGTON STATE IN FEBRUARY: The Cougars are 27-14 when playing inFebruary under Donnie Marbut...Washington State highlights include a 7-6 victory atNo. 13 Texas in 2007 and 9-3 win over No. 10 Missouri in the championship gameof the Buccaneer Classic hosted by Charleston Southern in 2006...Cougars were 10-2in 2006 and also captured the River City Classic hosted by Sacramento State and UCDavis.
CONSECUTIVE WINNING SEASONS: In 2009, Washington State seeks its fourth-straight winning season, something the Cougars have not accomplished since 1994 whena 35-26 record capped a run of 37-consecutive campaigns with a mark above .500.
SERIES WITH RAZORBACKS: Washington State has won two of three previousmeetings...in 1987, the lone series game at Fayetteville, Jeff Hooper belted a grand slam to highlight a seven-run fourth and John Olerud pitched seven innings for the victory as WSU won 11-5...second game of the series in Fayetteville was rained out...in 1992 at the Kingdome in Seattle, the Cougars broke open a 3-2 game with a fi ve-run eighth inning...Kevin Brunstad had the key hit in the rally, a two-run single, and WSU posted an 8-4 victory...in 2000 at Arlington, Texas, 2008 American League Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee tossed a four-hitter for the Razorbacks and Arkansas defeated WSU 1-0 despite Todd Meldahl's three-hitter with nine strikeouts.
COUGARS AGAINST THE SEC: Including Arkansas, Washington State is 8-1 alltimeagainst current members of the Southeastern Conference...Cougars routed Alabama9-1 in the 1950 College World Series, defeated Vanderbilt 6-2 at Riverside, Calif., in 1973, bested Tennessee 11-9 in 1992 at Seattle, won a 1994 meeting with Kentucky in Fresno, Calif., and recorded a pair of wins over the Wildcats in College Station, Texas during the 2002 campaign.

SHOW ME THE WAY HOME: Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Way was selected inthe 36th round of the 2008 Major Player Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the San Francisco Giants, but decided return to Pullman for his fi nal year of eligibility...led Washington State with a 4.01 earned run average last season and posted 68 strikeouts in 74 innings while going 4-4 with two saves.

THE KID FROM LEFT FIELD: Freshman Derek Jones is slated to start the Cougars'season-opener in left field...he would become the fi rst true freshman to man left field forWSU at the start of the season since Casey Kelley, who went on to play three seasons in the minors, in 1996.
TOUGH SCHEDULE: Beginning with the season-opening three games at No. 22 (Baseball America), the Cougars play 31 games against teams ranked in at least one preseason poll and 10 others pit WSU against teams receiving votes in a preseason poll...Cougars are receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball poll while the Razorbacks are receiving votes from Collegiate Baseball, USA Today, and the NCBWA.
