UW Men Hit The Links In California
Feb. 19, 2009
WESTLAKE, CALIF. --The No. 6-ranked Washington men's golf team will bring Nick Taylor, Richard Lee, Chris Killmer, Darren Wallace and Ty Chambers to the USC Collegiate Invitational Monday at the North Ranch Country Club.
The Huskies are looking to improve upon their impressive second-place finish at the Hawai'i-Hilo Intercollegiate earlier this month. The only team UW was unable to best on Kona Island was No. 1 USC, which is something the Dawgs are eager for another shot at. The junior trio of Taylor, Lee and Killmer is all but certain to make waves in southern California.
Two Huskies will have to battle a competitive field that includes three teams in the top 25 to keep their respective streaks alive. Taylor is trying for his third consecutive medalist honor, after posting the top three-day totals at the CordeValle Collegiate in November and the Hawai'i-Hilo in February. Lee is after his sixth straight top-10 finish. Lee, a transfer from Bellevue Community College, has burst into Division I play by finishing in the top 10 of all his tournaments. He and Killmer finished in a tie for third place at the Hawai'i-Hilo. Killmer won the Husky Invitational in September -- just days after qualifying to be a member of the team -- and has been a mainstay in head coach Matt Thurmond's lineup since.
Wallace played in nearly every tournament in 2007-08 for the Huskies, but is making his return to the lineup for the first time since the Huskies' first tournament of this season, the Gopher Invitational. Wallace participated in the NCAA Championship as a sophomore for the Huskies last season. Dylan Goodwin is making his first career collegiate lineup at the USC Collegiate. Chambers, a native of Brush Prairie, Wash., played as an individual at the Husky Invitational in September. The Huskies will also bring sophomore Tze Huang Choo to Westlake to play as an individual.
The invitational field includes: USC (No. 1), Stanford (7), UCLA (20), BYU, Fresno State, California, Loyola Marymont, Pacific, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Diego State and UC Irvine.
