Sixth-Ranked Bruins Knock Off #1 Alabama

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Senior Amanda Kamekona went 2-for-4 with a home run, junior Kaila Shull had a pair of hits and two RBI and sophomore Donna Kerr struck out seven in a three-hit, complete game performance, as the sixth-ranked Bruins defeated #1 Alabama 4-1 on Friday at the Cathedral City Softball Classic.

The Bruins improve to 9-2 on the year and hand Alabama (10-1) its first loss of the season.

Kerr gave up just one run and walked four to improve to 5-2 on the year. She retired eight in a row at one point, fanning the side in the second.

UCLA jumped all over Alabama with three in the top of the first. Kamekona led things off by crushing a 1-1 pitch over the left-field fence for her third home run of the season to make it 1-0. Sophomore Katie Schroeder followed with a single to right and moved to third on a double to right by sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore. Shull then singled to right to score both runners and put the Bruins ahead 3-0.

In the second, the Bruins tacked on another run to go up 4-0. Freshman Dani Yudin walked to lead off the frame and was pinch-run for by sophomore Lauren Mirabal. One out later, Kamekona singled to left and Schroeder walked to load the bases. Then with DiSalvatore at the plate, Alabama catcher Ashley Holcombe threw down to third to try and pick off Mirabal, but the ball went into shallow left field, allowing Mirabal to score the Bruins' fourth run.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Crimson Tide got on the board with their first hit of the game as Whitney Larsen homered to left to make it 4-1.

Charlotte Morgan started for Alabama, but retired only one batter, allowing four hits and three runs. Kelsi Dunne pitched the last 6 2/3 innings, giving up one unearned run, three hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.

The Bruins continue play at the Cathedral City Softball Classic on Saturday with two more games. UCLA faces #15 Massachusetts at 5:30 p.m. and North Carolina State at 8 p.m. Both contests will be played at Big League Dreams Park Fenway Field and will feature Gametracker and live audio on the schedule page of
