Cole Pitches No. 12 UCLA Baseball Past UC Davis, 5-2

LOS ANGELES - Freshman right-hander Gerrit Cole recorded seven strikeouts in six innings, allowing just one run and one hit, to lead the No. 12 UCLA baseball team past UC Davis, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Cole (1-0) recorded the win in his first collegiate start, making 83 pitches through six innings. He retired eight consecutive hitters from the first through third innings and faced no more than four batters in any single frame.
UC Davis' left-hander Andy Suiter (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs off three hits and six walks in two innings.
Freshman right-hander Trevor Bauer notched his first save in his first collegiate appearance, striking out two batters in the bottom of the ninth inning.
All nine players in UCLA's batting lineup reached base at least once via either a hit or walk. First baseman Casey Haerther belted his first home run of the season, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run. Shortstop Niko Gallego went 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and one walk.
UCLA led from the start against the visiting Aggies (0-2), scoring one run in the bottom of the first before adding three runs in the second.
In the first inning, Gallego scored from second base on a single up the middle by Haerther. In the third, Gallego brought home two runners with a triple to left-center field, and left fielder Chris Giovinazzo plated Gallego with a sacrifice fly to right.
UC Davis got on the board with one run in the top of the fourth, and UCLA answered with its fifth run in the bottom of the sixth, a solo homer to left-center field by Haerther. The Aggies loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and scored one run, reducing the Bruins' advantage to 5-2.
UCLA and UC Davis conclude their three-game series on Sunday, Feb. 22. Game time is 1 p.m. The Bruins will send right-hander Charles Brewer to the mound, and UC Davis will start with right-hander Tom Briner.
Game Notes: UCLA totaled six hits and 11 walks at the plate, one day after having registered 11 hits and 12 walks...freshman Trevor Bauer needed just 13 pitches in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the save...senior left-hander Brendan Lafferty allowed one run off two hits in two innings of relief...in two games, UCLA's pitching staff has registered a 1.00 earned-run average and .150 opponent batting average.
