The Washington State women's basketball team (10-15, 3-11 Pacific-10 Conference) closes out its weekend homestand against UCLA (15-9, 6-7 Pac-10) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Friel Court. The contest will mark WSU's 'Pink Zone' game to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Fans can listen to the match-up live on KQQQ 1150 AM in Pullman/Moscow, or at www.wsucougars.com. Steve Grubbs will call the game live from Friel Court. Fans can also watch the game live on GameTracker.
HIGH SCORING FRESHMEN
Freshmen guards Jazmine Perkins (338 points) and April Cook (307 points) entered this week ranked seventh and 15th, respectively, in freshmen scoring nationally. WSU is the only school in the country with two freshmen ranking in the top 20.
APPLETON JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB
Senior guard Katie Appleton scored eight points against Arizona State (Jan. 29), bringing her career total to 1,000. She is only the 12th women's basketball player in school history to reach the milestone.
NATION'S BIGGEST TURNAROUNDS
With five more victories already in 2008-09 than in all of last season, the Cougars entered this week ranked tied for 14th nationally amongst teams making the greatest turnarounds this season.
FROSH ONE-TWO PUNCH
Not only does Cougar freshman Jazmine Perkins rank fourth in scoring average in the Pacific-10 Conference at 14.2 ppg, she is the highest-scoring freshmen in the league and ranks fifth nationally amongst frosh. April Cook ranks second amongst Pac-10 freshman - and ninth overall - at 13.5 ppg, a mark that ranks eighth nationally. WSU is the only school in the country with two freshmen ranking in the top 10.
Senior guard Katie Appleton became Washington State's career leader in 3-pointers in an 83-48 loss at UCLA Jan. 22 at Pauley Pavilion. The Cougars held an early lead, but the Bruins gained control at the 16-minute, 37-second mark (8-6) and didn't let go.
The Cougars have lost 17 consecutive games against the Bruins dating back to their victory, a 74-52 win at Friel Court Jan. 6, 2001. The Cougars trail 6-40 in the all-time series, including a 6-17 mark at home.
One random WSU student will have the opportunity to win the equivalent of one semesters' in-state tuition at the UCLA game. The individual drawn will have 60 seconds to make his or her way down to Friel Court with a WSU Student ID and claim their prize.
