FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Andrew Darr's suicide squeeze single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave No. 22 Arkansas a 4-3 victory over Washington State and a three-game sweep of the season-opening baseball series for both schools.

Andy Wilkins led off the eighth inning for Arkansas (3-0) with a double off WSU (0-3) redshirt-junior reliever Jeremy Johnson (0-1). After Tom Hauskey sacrificed pinch runner Collin Kuhn to third, the game-winner scored when Johnson came up short on a diving attempt of Darr's bunt.

Darr's heroics made a winner out of Justin Wells (1-0) who pitched an inning and two-thirds of shutout ball. Stephen Richards worked a perfect ninth for his first save.

'We pitched well and played good defense all weekend long, but we did not get the big hits we needed to win games,' Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'On the road against a nationally-ranked team, we saw some good things, but Arkansas made a few more plays then we did and that was the difference.'

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Matt Fanelli reached on an error with one out, moved to second on a single by sophomore Shea Vucinich, took third on a fielder's choice and came home on Arkansas's second error of the frame.

The Razorbacks tied the game with a run in the second on a RBI-double by Travis Sample, and then added a run in the third and another in the fifth for a 3-1 advantage.

In the Cougar sixth, senior Greg Lagreid singled to open the inning and senior Jared Prince followed with a walk. Junior Michael Weber's sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out and senior Alex Burg was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Sophomore Matt Argyropoulos worked a walk to force in a run and senior Travis Coulter tied the game 3-3 with a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars begin a six-game homestand when they host Gonzaga, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Sophomore Shea Vucinich batted .429 in the series against Arkansas and is 19-for-32 (.594) in his career during the month of February...sophomore Matt Argyropoulos drove in five runs over the weekend, surpassing his 2008-RBI total of Cougar relievers combined to post a 2.84 earned run average...WSU was swept in a nonconference series for the first time since Feb. 14-16, 2003 (three games) at Long Beach State.
