UCLA Leads After First Round of Wildcat Invitational

PUERTO PENASCO, Sonora, Mexico - Top-ranked UCLA fired an opening round 287 and is the only team under par after the opening round of the 2009 Wildcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona at the Peninsula Golf Club.
The Bruins hold a 8-shot lead over Arizona State, which carded a first round team total of 295 (+7) and sits one shot ahead of Denver. Oklahoma State and Tulane share 4th place at 299 (+11) on the par-72, 6,146-yard course.
On the individual side, Juliana Murcia of Arizona State posted the lowest score of the day. She owns a 2-stroke lead over Pia Halbig of California and Stephanie Kono of UCLA after shooting a 5-under 67. Linn Gustafsson and Glory Yang of UCLA share 4th place after shooting 1-under rounds of 71.
The host Wildcats currently sit in a tie for 12th place with UNLV after finishing at 311 for the opening round. Sophomore Alejandra Llaneza led the team at 3-over 75, sharing 22nd place with junior Emily Mason, who is playing the event as a non-scoring individual.
