UW Women Fall To USC On Senior Day, 77-53
Feb. 22, 2009
SEATTLE - After snapping a 12-game losing streak with a big win over UCLA Friday night, Washington wasn't able to make it two in a row, falling to USC, 77-53, in its regular season home finale at Bank of America Arena, Sunday.
The Huskies (6-19, 2-13 Pac-10) were plagued by a slow start as the Women of Troy (14-11, 8-6 Pac-10) jumped out with a 14-2 run to open the game and never quite looked back. Washington closed to within seven points twice - once in the first-half and then with 15:36 remaining in the game. But USC ran away with a 16-3 spurt to lead by 20 (52-32) with 9:07 to go.
'I definitely wish we could have sent our seniors out on a better note but at least we got one of the games on senior weekend,' UW head coach Tia Jackson said following the contest. 'USC played a solid game. Their zone caused us some problems. We were not able to attack it until right before halftime and that was really one of the issues we had on the court. Giving up 17 offensive rebounds was also a problem for us.'
Washington, which made just one of its first 14 attempts from the field to open the game, was led by eight points from redshirt-freshman center Mackenzie Argens. Junior guard Christina Rozier grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with seven points and three assists. Husky leading scorer Sami Whitcomb was held to single-digits for the second-straight game with seven points.
Senior guard Brynn Cameron led three USC players in double-figure scoring with 13 points. Senior center Nadia Parker added 12 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard Briana Gilbreath contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.
USC held the Huskies to just a 29.9 percent clip from the field and caused UW to commit 21 miscues. The Women of Troy made the most of their defense, scoring 18 points off Husky turnovers. USC shot 42.9 percent from the field including a 50 percent mark in the second-half. The Women of Troy sank seven three-pointers including three from Cameron.
Washington will now play its final three regular season games on the road beginning with a trip to the desert next week. The Huskies will take on Arizona State, Feb. 26, and Arizona on Feb. 28. UW will play its season finale at Washington State, March 6.
