Amanda Kamekona Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
Feb. 23, 2009
Senior second-baseman Amanda Kamekona (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala HS) of the UCLA softball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Feb. 17-22.
Kamekona posted hits in all six games last week for sixth-ranked UCLA, helping the Bruins to a perfect 6-0 record and ranked victories over #1 Alabama, #14 Fresno State and #15 Massachusetts at the Cathedral City Softball Classic. Kamekona hit .364 (8-for-22) with 10 runs batted in, five runs scored, three home runs and two doubles.
After going 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI, a double and a walk on Tuesday against Simon Fraser, Kamekona got the Bruins off to a good start against the top-ranked Crimson Tide on Friday. Kamekona hit a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning to stake the Bruins to a quick 1-0 advantage. The senior went 2-for-4 in the game as the Bruins won 4-1.
On Saturday, Kamekona had six RBI in a pair of victories. Against #15 UMass, the senior broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth, as UCLA went on to win 4-2. Kamekona added four more RBI on one swing of the bat against North Carolina State. With the Bruins leading 2-0 in the second and with the bases loaded, Kamekona hit her first career grand slam to the deepest part of the park in center field to put UCLA on top 6-0. She added a single in her second at-bat of the second inning to finish the game 2-for-3.
Kamekona finished off the weekend with another home run against Maryland on Sunday. A two-run shot in the sixth inning, her third homer of the weekend, gave the Bruins some insurance in a 5-0 victory. Against #14 Fresno State, the leadoff hitter singled in her first at-bat and came around to score the Bruins' first run, as UCLA run-ruled Fresno State 10-2 in five innings.
With a seven-game hitting streak, Kamekona has upped her season average to .314. She is second on the team with five home runs and 16 runs batted in.
This is Kamekona's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
