Westlake Village, Calif. The Oregon State men’s golf team concluded the first day of the USC Collegiate Invitational, Monday at the North Ranch CC in Westlake Village, Calif.

Oregon State opened up their spring season with two rounds of 18-hole play. It struggled to get out of the gate during round one and found that they had to play catch through most of round two.

“This is a tough golf course and it was a tough way to start our first event of the spring,” Watts said. “We struggled to put the ball below the hole and were forced to play defensively for most of the day.”

Despite the slow start in the morning, the Beavers found their stroke to finish off the second round with everyone dropping their scores late in the day.

Transfer Junior Jesse Schutte had the lowest score for the Beavers in the second round shooting a 1-over par 71. He finished off his last round by birdying three of his final five holes.

Freshman Jonnie Motomochi also improved as the second round concluded by birdying his final three holes to finish 5-over for the round.

Senior co-captain Alex Williams finished his second round with a birdie in his final three holes. Junior co-captain Tyler Simpson finished his second round with an eagle on the par-5 eighth followed by three straight pars.

Freshman Morten Madsen finished 3-over in his final round of the day.

Schutte and Madsen both saw their first action since joining the Beavers over the winter months.

“It was nice to get our new guys into the lineup and for them to get a few rounds under their belts as Beavers,” Watts said.

Stanford University leads the tournament finishing at 8-under through two rounds. They finished with a team total of 560.

Gregor Main of UCLA leads the field and is 4-under after day one. He is closely pursued by six others who are at 3-under.

The Beavers will conclude action at the USC Collegiate Invitational Tuesday when they tee off the first hole starting at 7:30 a.m. Oregon State will be paired with the University of the Pacific, San Diego State, and Fresno State.
