Women's Basketball Dispatches UC Santa Barbara

Feb. 24, 2009

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Oregon State women's basketball team concluded its regular season non-conference slate by defeating UC Santa Barbara, 70-61, Tuesday night at The Thunderdome.

The win gives the Beavers 10 non-conference victories this season. That is the most in a single season for Oregon State since the Beavers began competing in the Pacific-10 Conference in the 1986-87 season. Overall, Oregon State is 16-10 this season and looks to close out strong in league play when it hosts Oregon, USC and UCLA over the next two weeks to end the season.

Three different Beavers scored in double figures to lead the team Tuesday night, led by Talisa Rhea, who sank three three-pointers to finish with 23 points. Rhea sank 10 baskets from the field and had her sixth 20-point game of the season.

Brittney Davis kept her double-figures streak intact at 11 games after getting 19 points on 5-of-14 shooting. Davis hit on two three-pointers - both coming in the first half - and was good on 7-of-8 free-throw attempts.

Alex Mitchell also hit double figures for Oregon State, grabbing 14 points to go along with six rebounds.

Overall, the Beavers shot 45.9 percent from the field compared to 42.9 percent for UCSB. The Beavers attempted 12 more shots from the field, and 13 overall from beyond the three-point line.

Oregon State also set a school record with fewest turnovers with four. The original record of six was set in 2006 against Oregon, and that was equaled in the seventh game of this season against UNLV.

The Beavers also controlled the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds to the Gauchos' 26. Oregon State also attempted 12 free throws - making nine - compared to just four for UC Santa Barbara (17-9 overall).

Oregon State took a 31-26 into halftime after a back and forth first half. The Beavers built up the five-point lead after a 15-3 run to end the half. The run stretched over the last 8:11 of the first half and consisted of just one UCSB basket - a three-pointer by Sha'Rae Gibbons with 50 seconds remaining.

UCSB also held the lead at various points of the first half, last coming at a 16-14 advantage with 11 ½ minutes to play. But that was short lived as the Beavers went on their 15-3 record.

Mitchell led the Beavers with 10 first-half points, followed by Rhea, who had nine of her own. Davis sank two three-pointers to finish with eight points in the first half.

Jenna Green led UC Santa Barbara with 12 points and Lauren Pedersen had 11.

Oregon State returns home Saturday for a three-game stretch at legendary Gill Coliseum. The Beavers open the stretch against Oregon in the Civil War, presented by the Northwest Dodge Dealers. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. PT tip Saturday night. It can be heard live on KLOO 1340-AM in the Corvallis area and by visiting Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com). Todd Mansfield will call all the action.

Saturday night's game will also air live on FSN Northwest, with Brad Adam calling the game and former collegiate and WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes serving as the color commentator.

Oregon State Notes: The game marked a homecoming for Oregon State assistant director of basketball operations, Stacy Clinesmith, who was a four-year letterwinner for the Gauchos from 1996-2000 ... While at UCSB, Clinesmith led the team to four Big West Conference titles ... The game marked the final non-conference regular season contest for the Beavers ... OSU entered the game with a 9-1 non-conference record ... The Beavers, in fact, played the Pac-10's final non-conference regular season game ... The Pac-10 Tournament, however, will count as non-conference games for each of the 10 Pac-10 programs ... The Beavers took a lead into halftime for the 17th time this season.
