No. 17 Pepperdine Defeats USC, 10-1

Feb. 25, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Matt Bywater threw six scoreless innings and struck out 10 Wednesday as the No. 17 Pepperdine Waves beat the host USC Trojans, 10-1, at Dedeaux Field. Bywater had a no-hitter through the sixth inning with one out before Grant Green blooped a double down the right field line.

The sophomore won the battle of the Thousand Oaks High graduates as USC freshman starter Chad Smith was unable to get out of the first after allowing four runs (three unearned). USC committed a season-high six errors on the evening.

Pepperdine (3-1) took advantage of two Green errors in the first for a four-run inning, adding three in the second for a 7-0 lead after Nate Simon hit a bases-loaded triple to left center off freshman lefty Danny Coulombe. Despite giving up three runs, Coulombe allowed just one walk with eight strikeouts and, at one point, struck out five straight batters.

The Waves added a run in the fifth and two in the eighth for a 10-0 lead. In the Trojan half of the ninth, freshman Ricky Oropesa's RBI groundout provided the lone run for USC. The Trojans finished the game with an entire lineup of freshman.

USC hosts Western Carolina in a nonconference series this weekend, Friday-Sunday (Feb. 27-March 1). Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast by a live video webcast on, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
