Libby Bassett Joins Cal as Assistant Coach

BERKELEY - Libby Bassett, former Saint Mary's College assistant coach and four-year letterwinner at the University of San Diego, has accepted an assistant coach position with the California women's soccer team, Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour announced recently.
'The players and staff are very pleased to welcome Libby to Cal,' Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. 'She has a very impressive resume from an academic, athletic and coaching background. We feel she will be a good role model for the players. She has already shown vigor for the game in her enthusiasm at practice and is fitting in well.'
At Saint Mary's, Bassett served as the primary goalkeeper coach, and planned and conducted all goalkeeping trainings. In her year with the Gaels, she garnered experience assisting in planning and implementing of training sessions, recruiting top athletes, breaking down and analyzing game film in addition to other soccer operations.
'I'm extremely excited to be at Cal and have the opportunity to work with Neil McGuire and Brian Zwaschka,' Bassett said. 'The team already has a lot of talent. With the great recruiting classes coming in over the next few years I know that we can continue to develop this program into one of the best in the Pac-10 and the country.'
Prior to coaching at Saint Mary's, Bassett spent a year as an assistant coach with her alma mater. At USD, she also served as the goalie coach and coordinated and promoted successful USD summer soccer camps and clinics. She also supported and monitored the academic progress of the student-athletes. She was instrumental in the recruiting process at both Saint Mary's and USD, contacting and evaluating potential recruits as well as helping the new recruits transition to college.
Bassett played at USD from 2000-2004, advancing to the NCAA Tournament all four years. She was named the 2004 MVP of her squad, a West Coast Conference honorable mention in 2003, and a WCC scholar athlete. Bassett also attended a U.S. Under-21 National Team training camp while playing at USD. In 2003 and 2005, Bassett trained with Italian Serie A teams ACF Milan and Fiammamonza, respectively.
Bassett graduated Magna Cum Laude from USD with a bachelor's in history in 2004. She earned her a master's in international ooperation and development frrom the University of Pavia, Istituto Universitario Degli Studi Superiori in Pavia, Italy, in 2007.
