PULLMAN, Wash. - Sophomore Matt Argyropoulos singled in two runs to highlight a seven-run eighth inning as Washington State rallied past No. 16 Oklahoma in the Cougars' baseball home opener, Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

With the score tied 2-2, freshman Derek Jones walked off Oklahoma (5-2) starter Andrew Doyle (1-1) to open the Washington State (1-3) eighth. Reliever Chase Anderson walked junior Michael Weber and freshman Patrick Claussen's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with one out.

After sophomore Ryan Peterson was intentionally walked to load the bases, senior pinch hitter Jared Prince walked on four pitches to force in a run and put the Cougars on top 3-2. Senior Greg Lagreid was hit by a pitch to force in another run before Argyropoulos plated two with a single to center field that increased the WSU lead to 6-2.

Trey Sperring came out of the bullpen and walked senior Travis Coulter to load the bases again. Sophomore Shea Vucinich drove in a run with a ground out and freshman Derek Jones capped the rally with a two-run double to left-center field.

'We are going to rely on our pitching and tonight we got a good outing from Matt Way and our bullpen did a nice job,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'We had some timely hitting in the eighth inning and were able to take advantage of some free passes.'

Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI-single by Tyler Ogle. The Cougars went ahead 2-1 in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Argyropoulos and Jones.

In the sixth, the Sooners tied the game on a triple by Bryant Hernandez to lead off the inning and a wild pitch by Way, WSU's senior starter, with two outs. Way gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits, walked three and struck out seven in six innings. Redshirt-junior Jeremy Johnson (1-0) worked two shutout innings and struck out a career-high four to earn the victory.

The Cougars and Sooners continue their four-game series with a doubleheader, Saturday beginning at noon. Prince is scheduled to start on the mound for WSU and will be opposed by Antwonie Hubbard.
