Gophers Beat UW, 6-5, In 10-Inning Heartbreaker

Feb. 28, 2009

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota's Derek McCallum was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th, forcing in the winning run to give the Gophers a 6-5 win over the Washington baseball team Saturday night at the Metrodome on the second day of the Dairy Queen Classic.

The Huskies (2-4) had rallied from a 5-0 deficit to send the game into extra innings, but in the 10th, Kyle Geeson drew a leadoff walk off of UW reliever Brian Pearl (0-1). An error and a hit batter loaded the bases before Geoff Brown came on to face McCallum, who was hit on the arm by an inside pitch, forcing in Geeson and ending the game.

Down 5-1 heading into the eighth, Kyle Conley started the rally, leading off the inning with his third homer of the season. After a pinch-hit single from Aaron Russell, Julien Pollard lofted his first home run of the year down the right-field line, drawing the Huskies within a run at 5-4.

Jake Rife then walked, moved to second on a bunt and scored on a two-out single by Brendan Gardner-Young, tying the game at 5-5.

Minnesota opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. After a walk and a single put runners at the corners with no outs, a sacrifice fly from A.J. Pettersen scored one. Later in the inning, Michael Kvasnicka hit a ground-rule double to left-center, plating another run to give the Gophers a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, with Adrian Gomez on in relief of Husky starter Tyler Cheney, the Gopher bats remained hot. Kyle Knudson led off the inning with a home run and Eric Decker followed with a double. He scored on a single from Jon Hummel, who eventually scored on a single from Derek McCallum, giving the Gophers a 5-0 lead.

Washington scored its first run in the fifth when Doug Cherry singled, stole second and eventually scored from third on a balk.

Scott Fern (1-0), who pitched the 10th, got the win for the Gophers (4-2). Husky freshman Andrew Kittredge worked four innings of scoreless relief to keep the Huskies close.

Knudson and Matt Nohelty each had four hits for the Gophers. Gardner-Young led the way for the Huskies with three hits.

Sunday, the weekend concludes with an 11:00 a.m. CT game vs. UC Santa Barbara. A live audio broadcast of the game will be available at
