No. 4 USC Men's Tennis Downs No.23 Golden Bears

Feb. 28, 2009

The No. 4 USC men's tennis team, coming off a close loss to No. 5 Stanford on Friday, swept No. 23 California on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon at Marks Stadium 7-0. USC was led in doubles play by Nguyen/McNaughton who solidified the doubles point for the Trojans with a 9-7 win over California's Katsarov/Stewart and in singles play had strong play from all positions to earn a sweep. The win puts USC at 10-2 on the season and Cal at 3-5.

In doubles play No. 2 Poldma/Kecki took care of Cal's Dahan/Heavey 8-4. Out of the No. 1 spot, #3 Farah/Johnson lost a close match to #24 Chizever/Zerboni 8-6. This is only the second time that that duo has lost in doubles at a dual match this season, putting their record at 9-2 in duals and 22-5 overall. The fate of the doubles point was left up to duo Nguyen/McNaughton out of the No. 3 slot, with today marking the first time these two have taken to the court together as a doubles team. The combination worked and Nguyen/McNaughton were able to get by Cal's Katsarov/Stewart 9-7 to get the doubles point for the Trojans.

In singles the Trojans put together a dominating performance by winning all their matches. USC was led by #3 Robert Farah out of the No. 1 spot who finished off his opponent, Kallim Stewart 7-5, 6-1. Next up for the Trojans was No. 2 Jaak Poldma who beat Cal's Eoin Heavey 7-5, 6-4. Securing the match victory for USC was Jason McNaugton from the No. 6 slot who finished off Thai Tu 6-4, 6-1. It took No. 3 Steve Johnson three sets to beat Nick Andrews, with Johnson taking the first set 6-1, dropping the second to Andrews 6-3, but finishing him off 6-3. No. 5 Daniel Nguyen took the first set from Geoff Chizever 6-3 and went down to the wire in the second set, but finished off Chizever with a 7-2 tiebreak score to take the second set and match, 7-6. Rounding out a sweep of singles play was freshman Matt Kecki from the No. 4 spot, who won the first set 6-2, dropped the second to Cal's Katsarov 6-4 and finished off the third set with a commanding 6-3 win.

USC will look to ride this win into a big match on Wednesday (March 4) against crosstown rival UCLA (7-3) at Marks Stadium at 3 p.m.
