Bears Topped by No. 16 Arizona, 194.625-191.375

BERKELEY - The California women's gymnastics team held its own but lost, 194.625-191.375, against No. 16 Arizona on Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. This was the final home meet for seniors Bridgette Glass and Joanna Bennett as well as undergraduate assistant coach Jessica Kelley. The Golden Bears fall to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in the competitive Pac-10 while the Wildcats improve to 5-5 and 2-4 in conference meets.
Arizona barely won vault, 48.875-48.375. The Wildcats came away with the win on uneven bars, 48.675-47.225. Heading into the final rotation, Cal trailed by just a few points, 146.150-143.325, but could not pick up enough steam to overcome the Wildcats. Arizona won beam, 48.475-47.725, as well as floor exercises, 48.600-48.050.
Cal earned a collective 48.275 on vault, its first event of the meet. Hocini led the Bears on vault with a 9.775, which was good for a tie for fourth place overall. Three others - Alexandra Leggitt, Bridgette Glass and Joanna Bennett - all notched a 9.675.
Glass won uneven bars and paced Cal with a 9.800, which was just short of her 2009 best (9.825). Joanna Bennett was fifth overall with a 9.725.
Erica Varon and Sophia Hocini tied for second overall and first on the balance beam on the Cal squad, each scoring a 9.750. Right behind them was Joanna Bennett with a 9.725, which was good for fifth place
On floor exercises, Hocini tied for second with a 9.775. Avery Gee was sixth at 9.7000.
Next up, the Bears travel to Michigan for a meet at Western Michigan on March 6 and a tri-meet vs. Michigan State and Ball State in Lansing, Mich., on March 8.
