Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week

March 2, 2009

BERKELEY - Dana Vollmer set school, conference, NCAA and American records last weekend as the women's swimming and diving team won its first-ever Pac-10 Championship, making the senior from Granbury, Texas, the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.

On the opening day of the Pac-10 championships, the Vollmer clocked a Pac-10, NCAA, Cal and American record time of 1:41.53 in the leadoff 200 yard leg of the freestyle. Natalie Coughlin previously held the American Record with a time of 1:41.66 in the Long Beach (Calif.) Grand Prix on Jan. 14, 2007.

Vollmer took home the Pac-10 Championship in the 200-yard freestyle with a first place time of 1:42.68 - also an NCAA Automatic time.

In the last event of the Championship, Cal's foursome of Dana Vollmer, Erica Dagg, Madison Kennedy and Hannah Wilson sprinted to an NCAA, Pac-10 and school record time of 3:11.05 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, eclipsing the previous NCAA record time of 3:11.34 set by Arizona last season. The previous school record in the 400 free relay was 3:12.13 set in 2007.

Vollmer continued to set records with a Pac-10 conference championship meet record and first place time of 47.19 in the 100-yard freestyle. Vollmer was 0.19 seconds off of tying Natalie Coughlin's school record 47 flat in 2003. It was Vollmer's second conference title this week and her first in the 100 free.
