Arizona State's Welty and UCLA's Kerr Named Pac-10 Softball Player, Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--ARIZONA STATE senior catcher Renee Welty and UCLA sophomore pitcher Donna Kerr were named the Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Welty, a native of Gilbert, Ariz., hit .600 over a three-game span, helping the Sun Devils win the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational tournament title. The senior made the most of her five at bats, belting two home runs and driving home four batters. In her one-for-one performance against New Mexico State, Welty homered on her solo plate appearance bolstering the Sun Devils to the 6-2 victory. Welty finished the weekend slugging 1.800, with two of her three hits knocked out the park.
This marks the first career Pac-10 honor for Welty and the 58th all-time for the Sun Devils.
Kerr led UCLA to four of its six wins on the week for the Bruins, striking out 41 batters in 22 innings and setting a career high in strikeouts on Sunday. The San Diego, Calif., native recorded double figures in strikeouts in four of her last five contests, including setting a career high in strikeouts with 16 in the Bruins’ 13-0 shutout of San Diego. Kerr is 10-2 to start the season with a 2.89 ERA in 13 appearances.
Kerr earns her second career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week accolade with UCLA earning its 108th all-time.
