Breaking It Down With Bailey
March 3, 2009
This last weekend had its ups and downs and we believe that we didn't play to our potential.
We only got to play three games this weekend due to the lovely winter weather and each of the games had some challenges. First of all, the wind made standing around miserable. I'm sure it made the temperature drop five degrees. And secondly, we scored a lot of runs this weekend, so our offense was doing what it needed to do, but our defense had some uncharacteristic flubs. It's not a big deal though, we will sharpen up.
Highlights of the weekend: in our first home game on Friday we had back-to-back home runs and the next day, in our second home game, we went back-to-back again. Freshman Felicia Harris showed her power by going yard Friday and again on Saturday, including a grand slam to open up on Seattle U. Two other freshmen showed their power, Kimi and Niki, and that's always a plus when your rookies can contribute like that. We also taught the five rookies what it's like to pull the big tarp on and off the field, which hopefully doesn't have to happen too often this season. The seniors are continuing to lead our team, which is awesome to see, and I know that other girls are starting to step up and prove their leadership abilities.
With so many girls on the team, it's nice that Coach Tarr can switch around the lineup when something isn't working. Although it is generally nice to know who is starting where every game, this year it doesn't matter. Everyone is going to get their shot to step up and that seems to be working out nicely for our team.
In order to get five more wins this weekend we will have to play with desire and have a lot of fun. Alabama has a great fan base and they're pretty rowdy. It's going to be so much fun to play in that kind of an atmosphere, one that will be even more intense than the Florida game. A face-off of the two #1 teams in the nation. No big deal. But of course we won't overlook the game we have before we play Alabama, and that's Baylor, another opponent aiming at our target. We also play Georgia, and the last time we faced them we beat them in extra innings to go to Super Regionals, so they have reason to come out fired up against us.
This weekend we will just keep playing the way we know how and doing the things we do best. The tougher it gets, the better we play.
Soon to come: another video installment of Breakin' It Down will be in the making this week. So sit tight!
Stay classy and GO DAWGS!
P.S. Congrats to the Men's Hoops team on a great season so far, and good luck the rest of the way!
