Guidos, Husky Hitters Lift UW Past UO, 10-2

March 4, 2009

SEATTLE - UW starter Ben Guidos worked six one-hit innings and first baseman Troy Scott notched three hits, including a home run, as the Washington baseball team beat Oregon, 10-2, in a non-conference game Wednesday at Husky Ballpark.

The Huskies (4-5) swept the two-game, non-Pac-10 series, having beaten the Ducks (3-5) by a score of 5-3 on Wednesday.

Guidos, a sophomore from Highline High, picked up the victory to improve to 1-1. He didn't allow a hit until a one-out bunt single by Curtis Raulinaitis in the fourth, having retired the first 10 Ducks in order prior to that. He allowed just the one hit, walked one and struck out four.

Relievers Geoff Brown and Jacob Clem each threw a perfect inning of relief to carry a one-hit shutout into the ninth. However, the Ducks broke up the shutout bid with two in the ninth off of freshman reliever Aaron West. However, the UW staff still combined on a three-hitter.

Scott homered and drove in two for the Huskies, who also got four runs batted in from third baseman Pierce Rankin and a pair of doubles from second baseman Julien Pollard. Every Husky starter had a hit as the team combined for 17 base hits.

Washington opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Scott, a sophomore from Auburn, led off by belting a 3-1 pitch over the center field fence, his second homer of the season, staking the UW with a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. After loading the bases on a double, a walk and a bunt single, Jake Rife beat out an infield single to score Pollard from third. On the next play, Rankin dribbled a ball up the first base line on a check swing. As reliever Scott McGough waited for the ball to roll foul, two runners came in to score while the ball remained fair.

Scott followed with his third hit of the day, lacing a ball up the middle to score Rife from second, making it 5-0.

In the sixth, Pollard reached on a leadoff double for the second straight inning. Freshman shortstop Andy Bethel followed with a double of his own to drive in Pollard. After a single and a wild pitch put runners at second and third, Rankin singled to center, driving in two more.

In the eighth, Rankin doubled and scored on an error and Kyle Conley singled and scored on a Brett Wilcox single to account for the final tally.

Ducks starter Alex Keudell (0-1) suffered the loss. He worked four-plus innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

This weekend, the Huskies return to the road for a three-game series vs. Nevada in Reno. Fans can catch live audio broadcasts of all three games via the 'Dawg Channel' at
