Carmen Stellar Named Pac-10 Diver of the Month for February
March 5, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Carmen Stellar of the Stanford women's swimming and diving team has been named the Pac-10 Women's Diver of the Month for February 2009, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Stellar also won the award in January, and is the first woman to win consecutive Pac-10 Diver of the Month honors in the same since UCLA's Paige Thompson in 2005-06 (December and January). This marks the sixth monthly award all-time for Stanford.
After an excellent January, Stellar followed with an even better February. She was the only diver to finish in the top-five for all three events at the 2009 Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, earning her Diver of the Meet accolades. Stellar won the Pac-10 title on the platform with a score of 257.55, finished second on the 3-meter with a 325.90 (just 1.8 points behind) and finished fourth on 1-meter by tallying a 289.90. The platform championship marked the first Pac-10 title for Stellar, while she won Stanford's ninth conference platform crown.
Prior to the Pac-10 Championships, Stellar won the 1-meter competition at BYU with a score of 295.20 and the 3-meter at Cal with a score of 308.93. Her performance in Berkeley helped the Cardinal put the finishing touches on its undefeated, 20-0 dual meet season.
Stellar will next compete at the upcoming NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, held in Oklahoma City, OK from March 12-14.
