Q & A With Laura McLellan

March 5, 2009

GoHuskies.com correspondent Michelle Augustavo caught up with her teammate Laura McLellan this week prior to the Huskies' trip to Pullman for their regular season finale versus Washington State. McLellan is coming off a team-high 16-point performance against Arizona last Saturday and has averaged a team-high 10.5 points in UW's last four games. The Campbell, Calif. native chatted about the team's goals for their final regular season game and the upcoming Pac-10 Tournament, what her favorite post move is and a few unknown facts about two of her teammates.

GoHuskies.com: This has been a tough season for you girls...what is your mindset going into your last Pac-10 game of the season?
Laura McLellan: 'We're just looking to end the Pac-10 season on a good note with a win.'

GH: The last time out vs. Washington State the Huskies won pretty handily...what's it going to take to get this last win on the road in Pullman?
LM: 'I think it's just going to take a lot of execution both defensively and offensively. They are a much better team than they were when we played them (in January), they've gotten a lot better. But we will also have Kristi (Kingma) and Mo (Sara Mosiman) who sat last time because of injuries, so I think it's just going to take us executing our game plan.'

GH: You're coming off a great game individually (16 points vs. Arizona)...how do you plan to keep that up for the remainder of the season?
LM: 'Keep working hard in practice and listen to what the coaches have to say. I just have to keep working hard in practice and hope that it will carry over into the games.'

GH: You have gone in and out of the starting line-up a ton this year...do you have a preference whether you start or not?
LM: 'No, actually it really doesn't matter. It seems like I do play better coming off the bench anyways (Arizona and UCLA games). I've been playing so I really have no complaints whether I start or not.'

GH: I know you are one who has a few nagging injuries...how are those injuries holding up?
LM: 'Better than I expected. Last year I was out for a little while with injuries. Now I feel pretty good everything is just really sore at this point, but that's just because it's late in the season. But there is nothing serious, no surgeries or anything like that.'

GH: Despite the win against UCLA a little over a week ago the team was on a 12-game losing streak...has it been hard for the team to stay up and remain positive?
LM: 'Well, yeah, it's obviously been hard going on a 12-game losing streak because it's a 12-game losing streak. I think we've done a good job of being positive and staying together. We've gone through it as a team.'

GH: What were your expectations for this season? And what are your expectations for the rest of the season?
LM: 'Definitely thought it would be a much different season than it was. I think we were picked to finish seventh in the Pac-10 and I thought we'd finish better than that maybe fourth or fifth right around there. I think everyone expected a lot better season out of us. For the rest of the season, obviously end the Pac-10 season with a win against WSU. We're playing on the first day of the Pac-10 tournament, looking to get a win in that, getting to the actual play of the tournament, and hopefully having a good showing there.'

GH: Do you have a favorite post move?
LM: 'I think Coach App (Fred Applin) would say my favorite post move is the baby hook. But I kind of like the little Shaq move, dribble to the inside and drop step baseline.'

GH: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
LM: 'Hang out with Sami Whitcomb, junior forward, Michelle Augustavo, senior center, and Kristi Kingma, freshman point guard. I also like to order Wing Zone and watch movies. Oh yeah, and also eat chips and guac from Chipotle.'

GH: Favorite food?
LM: 'Snack food...chips and guac from Chipotle. Real food...something I could have anytime pepperoni and chicken pizza.'

GH: What is the one thing you cannot live without?
LM: 'My cellphone!'

GH: What is your favorite color?
LM: 'Blue and purple.'

GH: Name one thing about each of the seniors that no fan would know.
LM: 'Michelle Augustavo...is obsessed with 89 cent sparkling waters from Safeway. Heidi McNeill...has an alter-ego by the name of Gus Chiggins that she loves to bring out at all times of the day at any occasion.'

GH: Thank you Laura and good luck over in Pullman!
LM: 'Thank you Michelle!'
