Dawgs Pull Away For 11-2 Win At Nevada

March 6, 2009

RENO, Nev. - A tie-breaking solo homer from Kyle Conley opened the door to a four-run eighth inning as the Washington baseball team, behind a strong pitching performance from Jorden Merry, beat Nevada, 11-2, Friday at Peccole Park.

The Huskies (5-5) won their third straight to even their record while Nevada fell to 2-7 on the season.

Washington entered the eighth with the score tied at 2-2, but Conley led off with a homer to give the UW a lead they didn't surrender as they scored four in the eighth and added five more in the ninth, highlighted by a Doug Cherry grand slam.

Merry (1-0), a senior from Pasco, went seven innings for the win, allowing two runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out nine.

Nevada scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning. Brett Hart blooped a double to shallow center to lead off and then scored on a single from Tyson Jaquez, giving the Wolf Pack a 1-0 edge.

The Huskies, who had only managed one hit through four innings, finally got on the board in the fifth, taking the lead with a pair of runs. After two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases, Tyler Graham came on for starter Stephen Bautista.

UW freshman Andy Bethel bounced into a force at second to drive in one run and, after a strikeout, Jake Rife singled up the middle to plate a second run, putting the Huskies in front, 2-1.

Nevada pulled even at 2-2 in the sixth when second baseman Matt Bowman led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season.

However, in the eighth, Conley belted a towering homer to left field to break the tie. Troy Scott followed with a double off the fence in left and then scored on a Ty Rasmussen single. After a walk and a bunt, Bethel doubled to the gap in left-center, driving in two more runs.

Washington added to its lead in the ninth as catcher Pierce Rankin led off with a homer, his second. Later in the inning, Cherry put the game out of reach by lofting a grand slam to left-center, his second homer of the year.

The series continues with 1:00 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday. Fans can catch live audio broadcasts of both games via the 'Dawg Channel' at gohuskies.com.
