Trojans Take First Game At Tulane, 4-2
March 6, 2009
NEW ORLEANS - Junior right-hander Brad Boxberger (Tustin/Foothills HS) allowed just two runs in 7 2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts Friday while catcher/pitcher Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) went 2-for-3 and threw 1 1/3 no-hit innings in relief for the save as the USC Trojans defeated the Tulane Green Wave, 4-2. Stock picked up his third save of the season in as many appearances.
Freshman Brandon Garcia (Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded his first collegiate home run in the fifth for the Trojans with a solo shot to right.
Boxberger and Tulane (7-5) starter Conrad Flynn held both teams in check with no runs through the first three innings. Stock put the Trojans up with an RBI single in the fourth, scoring Mike O'Neill from second. After Garcia's home run in the fifth, USC added another run in the sixth on Anthony Vasquez's sacrifice fly for the 3-0 lead.
Tulane had opportunities all evening and finally scored in the seventh when Evan Mistich hit an RBI double down the third base line. Ryan Cabral came in for Boxberger in the eighth, but gave up a walk and RBI single to Mistich for a 3-2 Trojan advantage. With the tying run at third, Stock entered the game as the pitcher and got Drew Allain to line out to third to end the threat. USC got an insurance run in the top of the ninth and Stock induced a ground ball from Seth Henry for the final out of the game.
The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start (Central time) with the finale on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
