Cal Rallies to Defeat BYU, 4-2

March 7, 2009

FRESNO - California made it a perfect 2-for-2 in Saturday's action at the Bayer CropScience Classic (hosted by Fresno State) after rallying from a 2-0 deficit to defeat BYU, 4-2. The Golden Bears blanked Providence, 3-0 in the earlier game. The victory also helped Cal match its season-high with six straight wins.

Cal (17-3) concludes the tournament with an afternoon affair with Fresno State at 1:00 p.m.

The Bears did not record a stolen base against the Cougars - only the second time that's happened all season.

Gina Leomiti provided the big bat for the Bears, knocking in three RBI. Valerie Arioto was effective at the dish and in the circle - 2-fo-2 with a run and seven innings with 10 strikeouts - the third time she has had 10 or more Ks in a game this season. Arioto improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

Cal fell in an early hole as BYU built a 2-0 lead after three innings of play.

But the Bears finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sanoe Kekahuna drilled a solo home run (her fourth of the season) over the right field fence to trim the deficit in half.

It was a big fifth inning for Cal when Shannon Houston and Arioto produced back-to-back singles to start the frame. Shannon Thomas then drew a walk to load the bases and Leomiti did the rest with a punishing single to right-center field to score all three runners.

That was all Arioto needed as she induced two groundouts with a strikeout in the sixth, before retiring three straight batters in the seventh after giving up a leadoff double.
