Softball Shuts Out Santa Clara, 3-0

Manoa, Hawai’i – Junior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) threw a two-hitter as the Oregon State softball team recorded its second shutout of the 2009 Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament against Santa Clara , 3-0, on Saturday morning.


Dyer allowed the first hit on a ball popped up over her head against the leadoff batter for the Broncos in the first inning before a two-out single up the middle in the seventh. She struck out four and earned a pair of assists. Dyer improves to 5-8 on the season.


Oregon State (13-11) chalked up seven hits and only allowed only five Santa Clara (2-12) base runners.


For the second day in a row, junior Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.) racked up a couple of RBI on a two-out hit. And sophomore McKenna Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.


Oregon State took the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out two-RBI triple by Black. With two outs on the board, senior DeAnn Young (Camarillo, Calif.) started the rally with a single to right field, followed by a four-pitch walk to freshman Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas). Black nearly scored on a throwing error but was held at third as a fly ball to centerfield ended the inning.


Senior Paige Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) scored another run for the Beavers in the third inning on a two out single by sophomore Erin Guzy (Beaverton, Ore.). Senior Stefanie Ewing (Scottsdale, Ariz.) advanced P. Lowe to third on her single to right center before Guzy hit her fourth RBI of the season to right field on her first pitch seen.


The Beaver defense helped preserve the shutout in the final inning as P. Lowe made a tough catch on a line drive before assisting the second out on a ground ball.


Santa Clara’s Briana Knight and Jenna Fong tallied the two hits. Pitcher Kaitlyn Rauschnot threw the complete game with three strikeouts. Her record now is 0-5.


Oregon State wraps up play in the 2009 Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament on Sunday with games against Radford at 3:00 p.m. and host team, Hawai’i at 7:00 p.m. Both times are Pacific. The game against the Rainbow Wahine will be broadcast on, the local ESPN flagship station.
