Tulane Evens Series With 7-3 Win Over USC

March 7, 2009

NEW ORLEANS - Seth Henry and Drew Allain each homered while starter Matt Petiton allowed three runs in seven innings Saturday as the host Tulane Green Wave defeated the USC Trojans, 7-3, to even the nonconference series. Steve Moritz also went 3-for-4 for the Green Wave.

Henry hit a solo home run in the first for an early 1-0 lead for Tulane (8-5). Jeremy Schaffer and Moritz singled to lead off the Tulane second. Jared Dyer doubled home Schaffer, followed by Josh Prince who belted a two-run triple to right for a 4-0 advantage. Nick Boullosa then hit a safety squeeze to the first base side to plate Prince for the 5-0 score and knock out Trojan starter Kevin Couture.

Freshman outfielder Garret Houts (Fort Collins, Colo.) put the Trojans (4-5) on the scoreboard with his first collegiate home run. Tulane responded with Allain's two-run shot to right center to push the lead to six. Anthony Vasquez (San Antonio, Tex.) recorded his second homer of the season with a two-run shot to right center in the fourth, completing the scoring for both teams.

USC got a strong relief appearance from redshirt freshman Andrew Triggs (Nashville, Tenn.), who held the Green Wave scoreless for five innings after giving up the Allain home run. Triggs gave up two runs on five hits in six innings of work with a walk and three strikeouts.

The series concludes tomorrow 11:30 a.m. (Central time) and will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.

Notes: Junior catcher Robert Stock threw out two base runners today...on the season, Stock has thrown out 5-of-12 runners (41.7 %), along with being the team's leading hitter (.375) and recording three saves on the mound...Triggs now has a 2.79 ERA in four appearances this season with opponents hitting just .235 against him...Triggs missed his senior year of high school after undergoing Tommy John surgery and is seeing his first action in two years...Houts became the second freshman in as many days to get his first collegiate home run after Brandon Garcia hit a solo shot in last night's 4-2 win.
