March 8, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - Led offensively by Melisa Koutz and Alissa Haber, the Stanford softball team (23-1) tacked another win onto its now 22-game streak today, beating Vermont, 3-0, at the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic.
Despite a slow day at the plate, Stanford outhit its 23rd opponent of the year, 6-3, and built its school-record winning streak to 22 games. Haber and Koutz both went 2-for-3 and Haber hit her fourth home run of the year.
Two of the three Vermont hits came off the bat of right fielder Bree Cassidy, who was 2-for-2 on the day. Both teams left five runners on base.
Sophomore Ashley Chinn (9-0) struck out nine and claimed the win in the circle, her ninth of the season and third of the weekend. The shutout was the sixth of her young career.
Stanford scored its first run in the second inning, as Melisa Koutz and Jenna Becerra teamed to generate a two-out rally. Koutz drove a double down the left line and scored on a single to left by Becerra.
In the third inning, Haber belted her 14th career home run to right center field. The long ball was her fourth of the year and gave Stanford a 2-0 lead.
Stanford squeaked out another run in the sixth inning. Shannon Koplitz singled to lead off the inning and was replaced at first by Maya Burns on a fielder's choice. Burns advanced to second on an ensuing walk and was driven in on Koutz' second hit of the game.
Stanford is back on the field at 1:30 p.m. today, taking on UC Davis in its final game of the tournament.
