March 10, 2009

TUCSON--Arizona kept its weekend hitting spree going for a Tuesday night doubleheader sweep of Canada's Simon Fraser University, 9-0 and 11-0.

UA won the nightcap behind 12 hits, three of them beyond the fences, and drilled The Clan in the opener, 9-0, behind four home runs. UA had 22 hits in its eight half-innings at the plate in the run-rule contests.

Brittany Lastrapes led the UA first off with a double to right-center and after Kristen Arriola walked, scored on Jenae Leles' single to left. Sam Banister then singled in Arriola.

The short stuff got things going, and then with two outs, Lini Koria slugged a her eighth home run, driving in Leles and Banister for a 5-0 lead.

Arizona batted around in the third to blast the game open. Lastrapes blasted her eighth home run of the year, a grand slam, to push the lead to 9-0. A moment later, Arriola doubled and Leles stepped to the plate to sock her 11th homer for the 11-0 margin.

UA (23-5) starter Jennifer Martinez earned her second victory in as many decisions, allowing only one hit in three innings of work in the five-inning game. In the first game, Arizona (22-5) had a two-run home run by Jenae Leles and a three-run blast by Victoria Kemp in the first inning to take a decisive lead, also collecting a double, two singles and a walk in the frame. It was Kemp's first of the year and Leles' 10th.

The second inning wasn't much different. After a Leles' one-out single, Sam Banister clouted her sixth home run. An out later, Lini Kori lifted her fifth homer of the year to right field to make it 9-0.

Arizona pitchers Sarah Akamine (11-3) and Jennifer Martinez combined to limit Simon Fraser to one hit, a leadoff double in the third inning by Stehani Durrant. Jennifer Van Egdom took the loss for Simon Fraser (7-5).
