Women's Tennis Hosts ASU, Travels to Baylor
A pair of ranked opponents are on tap for the UCLA women's tennis team this week, as the ninth-ranked Bruins (12-2; 1-0 Pac-10) are scheduled to face both No. 14 Arizona State (8-1; 3-0 Pac-10) and No. 5 Baylor (6-4). Action gets underway this Thursday, as the Sun Devils visit the Los Angeles Tennis Center for a non-conference meeting at 1:30 p.m. UCLA will then head to Waco, Texas on Saturday for a 10:00 a.m. (PST) showdown against Baylor. That match will mark the final non-conference contest of the season for the Bruins. Live stats are available for both matches: ASU Match / Baylor Match. Following Saturday's match, UCLA will be off for 12 days for finals and spring break.

Last Week
UCLA won both of its matches last week to extend its current winning streak to seven. The Bruins began the week with a dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind victory over No. 10 USC at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Thursday. The Bruins won the doubles point and quickly went ahead 2-0 after Yasmin Schnack posted a straight-set victory at the No. 1 spot. USC, however, won the next three matches to take a 3-2 lead and pull within a win from clinching the match. UCLA needed both Carling Seguso (court No. 6) and Ashley Joelson (court No. 5) to win both of their singles matches in order to pull out the win. Seguso tied the match at 3-3 after taking a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 victory over USC's Leyla Entekhabi. That set the stage for Joelson to provide the clinching win against Alison Ramos. Joelson, who also clinched the Bruins' 4-3 win over the Women of Troy back in 2007, stepped up to the occasion, downing Ramos, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 to give UCLA the upset. The Bruins had a much easier time in their Pac-10 opener against Oregon the following day, posting a 6-1 victory over the Ducks.

Bruins Up to No. 9 in ITA Rankings
UCLA moved up from No. 11 to No. 9 in this week's rankings issued by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Bruins have been ranked as high as No. 3 this season. Northwestern is the top-ranked team, followed by No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 5 Baylor. Individual rankings will not be released again until next week. Currently ranked singles players for UCLA include: No. 19 Yasmin Schnack, No. 27 Andrea Remynse, No. 81 Maya Johansson and No. 112 Nina Pantic. In doubles, Schnack and Remynse are ranked No. 5, while Carling Seguso and Stephanie Wetmore check in at No. 76. Complete ITA rankings can be accessed HERE.

Pantic GOes 1-1 in First Two Dual Matches
Freshman Nina Pantic was finally cleared to play by the NCAA last week, as the Bruin newcomer went 1-1 in singles action at the No. 4 position. Although she lost in straight sets to 54th-ranked Gabriela Niculescu of USC on Thursday, Pantic rebounded with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 decision over Oregon's Stephanie Macfarlane the following day. She also teamed with Ashley Joelson at No. 3 doubles against Oregon, defeating Trudie du Toit/Carmen Seremeta, 8-5.

Just Three Home Matches Remaining
UCLA has just three home matches remaining on the 2009 schedule, as the Bruins are slated to play their final five matches of the season on the road. Following this Thursday's encounter with Arizona State, UCLA will only have Stanford (March 27) and Cal (March 28) left on the home schedule. The March 28 showdown with Cal will be Senior Day for Bruins Ashley Joelson and Anna-Viktoria Lind.

Schnack, Remynse Assume No. 1 Role
Whether it's Andrea Remynse or Yasmin Schnack, UCLA has had success at that the No. 1 spot in the lineup this season. Remynse has played eight matches at the top position, going 5-2 overall. Her match against fifth-ranked Megan Falcon of LSU was suspended, although she was up a set at the time. One of Remynse's wins also came over defending NCAA Singles Champoin Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech. Schnack, on the other hand, is a perfect 5-0 at the No. 1 spot. Her biggest win was a 6-0, 6-3 victory over No. 17 Melanie Gloria of Fresno State.
