No. 9 Cal Squeezes Out 1-0 Win over Memphis

HONOLULU, HI - The ninth-ranked Golden Bears needed just two hits and a run to defeat Memphis in the opening day of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament hosted by Hawaii on Wednesday. Marissa Drewrey held the Tigers to three hits for her sixth shutout of the season, as the Golden Bears improved to 18-4.
Cal takes on Wisconsin on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., followed by Hawaii at 10:00 p.m. - both times are Pacific.
The Bears were held without a hit until the fifth inning when Shannon Houston tapped an infield single with one out. Houston then advanced to second after Vernae Sevilla drew a walk one batter later. Elia Reid then popped a fly ball to right field allowing for Houston to move to third. One batter later, Valerie Arioto singled through the left side, scoring Houston and giving Cal the 1-0 lead.
Memphis tried to answer in the top of the sixth inning when Lelani Bernardino singled with one out. But Drewrey remained poised and struck out Leandra Hines. Bernardino was then thrown out when she tried to steal second to end the inning.
It was a 1-2-3 inning for Drewrey in the top of the seventh, recording two Ks and inducing a groundout.
Drewrey moved to 11-4 on the season. She walked just one batter and had seven strikeouts.
